The Purpose of the South Florida Council of African Elders is to assist people of African descent, who have been and are still affected by the multigenerational effects of the Middle Passage, to heal from within and without. The Council will do this by taking its rightful place as a natural leadership entity of the community, having been duly qualified to do so as measured by the Council’s Policy. Further, the Council will assist the Community in adapting to the absence of the traditional formation of a council of elders, which, among those who were not kidnapped, involves evolution through a lifetime spent together. In that context, these lifetime knowledge of people and possibilities facilitates the creation of future leaders among African children. The Council will assist in creating an environment which fosters this forward movement and growth despite the disruption in our access to this ancient process.

The South Florida Council of African Elders restores self-governance, clear thinking, and unity to people of African descent in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward Counties. We do this through ethical leadership, community building, and education.
